Scarlett is a Material Researcher and Designer investigating environmental and social narratives embedded within industrial systems. Working across design and material innovation, their practice explores the hidden impacts of mining, mineral processing, and global supply chains, questioning the systems that shape our material world.

Through research-led experimentation with industrial by-products and overlooked resources, Scarlett reimagines material possibilities. Their work utilises material residues for processed outcomes that challenge conventional ideas of transparency and regeneration while highlighting the relationship between extraction/consumption and environments.

By bridging critical research with material development, Scarlett creates work that fosters greater responsibility within production systems and proposes more circular futures rooted in resource awareness and environmental accountability.

After Extraction is a material research project investigating the analysis and remediation of toxic waste embedded into landscapes by extractive industries.

Situated within a post-industrial mining landscape in Cornwall UK, the project focuses on deposited heavy metals that continue to pollute the environment today - long after mining and processing activities ceased in the area during 1980s.

Through solidification and stabilisation research using adjacent industrial by-products, such as Slag, a geopolymer material is formed capable of immobilising contaminates.

The resulting sculpture shows that toxic waste can be chemically contained and re-engineered.

By utilising these industrial waste streams for remediation and emerging material systems, After Extraction proposes circular innovation for post-industrial repair.

Grounded on the site of Wheal Maid Valley Tailings Lagoon, located in the Gwennap Valley of Cornwall. A site visit was conducted with permission of Gwennp Parish Council. Samples were taken for later SEM analysis documenting the mineral makeup of the site, serving as the foundation for After Extraction’s material process.

Wheal Maid was predominantly used as a tailings deposit in its later years, and we are presently still seeing its impacts. The finely ground waste material was produced during the mineral separation of tin processing and ultimately dumped, creating the large settling lagoons. This mineral-rich sludge contains high concentrations of heavy metals, mainly including Arsenic, Copper, Cadmium, Lead and Zinc, nodding to the remnants of the long history of the area’s mineral extraction and processing.

The tailings pools often turn bright red in the summer due to the oxidising iron and higher concentration of mineral residues present as water levels in the lagoon drop. This produces an aesthetic landscape that is often referred to as ‘Cornish Mars’, also implying the chemical hazardness of the site.

As part of the MA Material Futures programme, a dissertation was developed in the form of an artist’s book, expanding upon the site visit and situating After Extraction within its broader contexts.

Combining field documentation with critical research, the publication explores the material investigations and narratives that underpin the project.

Concretions explores the intersection of two highly resource-intensive industries: fashion and the built environment.

Through material experimentation and research into industrial waste streams, Scarlett investigated opportunities to reimagine discarded materials of these industries as new resources through the activation of low-carbon binders.

Combining waste textiles, recyled aggregates alongisde disused plaster, the project develops new geopolymer applications. These new textiles challenge conventional distinctions noting the permanence and fragility of these indsutries through material contrast.

Raised in Suffolk and currently based in London, Scarlett works as a researcher and material designer.

Their practice is shaped by a curiosity surrounding material supply chains, often investigating industrial by-products and the systems they reveal. Through material-led research and site visits, Scarlett explores how extraction, production, and waste intersect with politics, communities, economies, and environments, uncovering the wider narratives embedded within the materials that shape our world.
